A Question of Priorities
Sleep used to be more important than laundry. But now, laundry is more important than sleep. When did that sad transition happen? It's very late for me, my lights are folded, and I'm going to bed.

California Prop 8, Marriage btwn 1 man & 1 woman
In November, Californians will vote whether to add an amendment to the state constitution that marriage be defined as being between one man and one woman. A "yes" vote puts the amendment through (See ballotpedia.org.)
A friend in the ward just walked the presict yesterday, door to door, being nine months and 1 day pregnant--with two preschoolers at home!! Sheesh. Watching our church respond has been nothing short of remarkable; capable members are falling immediately into action by donating money and time and walking the presict. Many of them are uncomfortable going door to door, surprising country dwellers, but they still seem happy to do it anyway and fulfill their duty.

I walked last Saturday, and before I walked, I felt I needed to know more about things. I do know and have known several gay people, and I think both sides are asking the other to make a major sacrifice, and should act accordingly. The propaganda comes from both sides, as expected, and makes research harder. Mom Fawson really helped with my research, though I need to read more. I found this article by NPR "When Gay Rights and Religious Liberties Clash" to be the most helpful w/o being too biased.
As always, it has been fascinating to hear Brent's point of view. He feels prop 8 is a worthy and government-appropriate cause. However, he feels the real crux is the California Hate Speech Law, which can twist religious beliefs against an action to be discrimination against the person, not the action. And he never expects that we'll overturn that law.

Weekend of Desserts
I have this huge file folder of dessert recipes that I tear out from magazines but never have any reason to make. But, this week, with family in town and Brent's birthday to celebrate, we had lots of excuses to have DESSERT!The first night I was in charge I tried these coconut bonbons from Martha. Aren't they beautiful-looking? Hmmm. Of course, mine didn't turn out nearly so beautiful, which is why you're seeing only Martha's bonbons pictured here. Instead of having a thin, snappy chocolate shell, mine had a thick chocolate force field that was impenetrable to anything but the fiercest jabbing with a knife or a direct bite with your incisors.
I recently discovered I can make my own Dulce de Leche by boiling a can or two of sweetened condensed milk in water for 3 hours (or in a pressure cooker for 30 minutes once the top is rocking). It was a dangerous discovery, as this stuff tastes so good. So the second night Kate and I decided to invent our own recipe featuring Dulce de Leche, and we named it Dos Leches Creame pie.
